Malaysia is strengthening its position as a trusted international destination for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) with the official opening of the eighth edition of Asia ADR Week 2026, organised by the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Held from 12 to 16 October 2026 under the theme “Kainos: Where Vision Transforms Future,” the five-day conference brings together government leaders, policymakers, members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, international experts, business representatives, and industry stakeholders to examine the evolving role of arbitration, mediation, construction adjudication, and other ADR mechanisms.
The conference highlights the importance of effective dispute resolution in supporting commercial confidence, institutional development, and economic growth in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
Malaysia’s Vision for International Dispute Resolution
The official opening was conducted by YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation.
In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that an effective dispute resolution system is an essential component of Malaysia’s economic infrastructure, particularly as the country continues to attract investment across infrastructure, energy, technology, and other key sectors.
He highlighted the importance of developing a stronger, more accessible, and interconnected ADR ecosystem that serves domestic needs while contributing to regional growth. He also underscored the need for legal and institutional strengths to develop alongside physical and digital infrastructure, ensuring that businesses and investors have confidence in fair, efficient, and predictable mechanisms for resolving cross-border commercial disputes.
Institutional Independence and Legal Certainty
YB Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), highlighted the importance of institutional independence, legal certainty, and public confidence in establishing Malaysia as a trusted jurisdiction for international arbitration.
She emphasised that Malaysia should aspire not merely to participate in the global arbitration landscape but also to shape its future. According to her address, international recognition should translate into stronger commercial confidence, investment opportunities, and tangible economic benefits for the country.
AIAC’s Jubilee Pledge and Vision for 2028
As the Asian International Arbitration Centre approaches its 50th anniversary in 2028, the Centre has outlined its institutional vision through the introduction of the AIAC Jubilee Pledge.
The pledge sets out a renewed commitment to strengthening institutional foundations and advancing the development of alternative dispute resolution. It identifies eight key areas of commitment:
Rule of Law
Efficiency and Excellence
Strategic Cooperation
Openness and Accessibility
Leadership and Innovation
Venue and Global Home
Ethics and Evolution
Sustainability
These commitments reflect AIAC’s vision for a dispute resolution ecosystem that promotes accessibility, institutional excellence, ethical governance, international cooperation, innovation, and sustainability.
A key highlight of the event was also the unveiling of AIAC’s new institutional tagline, “The World Resolves Here,” signalling its commitment to strengthening its institutional foundations and contributing to Malaysia’s aspiration to become a trusted global home for alternative dispute resolution.
Advancing the Future of Arbitration and ADR
Asia ADR Week 2026 provides a platform for the international dispute resolution community to exchange perspectives, explore emerging developments, strengthen professional relationships, and identify opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
The Deputy Prime Minister formally declared the main conference open, encouraging stakeholders to work towards making Malaysia and Asia destinations where disputes can be resolved through fair, swift, and trusted mechanisms.
As AIAC looks towards its Golden Jubilee in 2028, its focus remains on translating institutional vision into sustained progress while contributing to a dispute resolution ecosystem that benefits Malaysia and the wider international business community.
